I chose not to treat immigration as a subject but as an individual and sensitive experience, as a kind of time travel.
Mati Diop, 22 June 1982, works and lives in Paris as a director and an actress.
Studying in the advanced degree program at Le Fresnoy (National Studio of contempory Arts) and le Pavillon (Art residency of Palais de Tokyo), she has directed four short films : BIG IN VIETNAM (2012) selected in the Tiger Awards Competition for Short Films at Rotterdam Film Festival. SNOW CANON ( 2011) in competition at Venice Film Festival- Orizzonti. ATLANTIQUES (2009) awarded of Tiger for short film at Rotterdam Film Festival and selected in many international festivals like New York Film Festival, Toronto or IndieLisboa. Her first short film, LAST NIGHT (France, 2004) was screened at Cinémathèque française.
She has also directed several videos: ILE ARTIFICIEL-EXPEDITION, selected as part of the Festival Cinema du Réel and also featured in group exhibitions at le Pavillon, Louis Vuitton Centre, Cultural Center of Delhi, as well as THE PARTY, featured in a group show at Palais de Tokyo. Between 2002 and 2010, she additionally regularly worked with different theatre directors producing collaborative video and sound works.
Mati Diop played the female lead in Claire Denis' 35 SHOTS OF RHUM for which she was awarded best actress at the MK2 young talent festival 2009. She also acted in Antonio Campos' SIMON KILLER (in competition at this years Sundance Film Festival).
