Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles a été élu « Meilleur film de tout les temps » par la revue britannique Sight & Sound en 2022. Sa réalisatrice, Chantal Akerman, estimait que son film était l’aboutissement de ses recherches sur la mise en scène et la narration. « C’est pour moi la rencontre d’un sujet et d’une forme », expliquait la réalisatrice. Chantal Akerman racontait également avoir écrit le rôle principal pour Delphine Seyrig : « ce qui était extraordinaire c’est qu’elle n’était justement pas ce personnage : elle était une grande dame. Si on avait quelqu’un qu’on a l’habitude de voir faire le lit et la vaisselle, on ne la verrait pas, comme les hommes qui ne voient plus leur femme faire la vaisselle. »

Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles was voted “Best Film of All Time” by British magazine Sight & Sound in 2022. Its director, Chantal Akerman, felt that her film was the culmination of her research into mise en scène and narrative. “For me, it’s the meeting of a subject and a form”, explained the director. Chantal Akerman also recounts how she wrote the lead role for Delphine Seyrig: “What was extraordinary was that she wasn’t just this character: she was a great lady. If we had someone we were used to seeing making the bed and doing the dishes, we wouldn’t see her, like men who no longer see their wives doing the dishes.”
