Andula, an innocent Czech girl from a factory town, is desperately in search of love. She believes she’s found it when she beds Milda, a charming young musician visiting from Prague. Milda, however, is only looking for a casual encounter, and leaves town assuming he’ll never see Andula again. But when Andula doesn’t hear from him, she packs up and heads to Prague, to the surprise of Milda and his parents.
This bittersweet comedy from the mid-1960s revealed Forman’s talent to the world. Its iconic visual style puts up in the shoes of a young Czech woman with a non traditional love life, and opens our eyes to the social and political context surrounding her, underlining its paradoxical aspects. With its sad and funny dialogues, Loves of a blonde offers us a sharp satire of an undemocratic and conformist society. Sooner or later, love comes then goes, leaving behind the melancholic souvenir of a pretty, funny pleasure.
