Synopsis

In the 1950s, Ludvík was expelled from the Communist Party and the University by his fellow students because of a humorous note. Years later, he tries to get his revenge by seducing Helena, the wife of one of his accusers. Released in 1969, the film based on a novel by Milan Kundera was soon banned by the authorities in his home country, making it “one of the Czechoslovak New Wave’s most renowned casualties”. It represents Kundera’s work prior to his emigration from Czechoslovakia.
