In the midst of Stalinist tyranny, six-year-old Leelo’s mother is sent to a prison camp. Haunted by her mother’s last words telling her to be a good kid, Leelo vows to be on her best behaviour in the confusing grown-up world in the hope that it will bring her mother back.
Adapted from her autobiographical novels, The Little Comrade has the delicate and poetic touch of Estonian writer Leelo Tungal, author of poems for children, puns and songs. And it is precisely through the lively and questioning gaze of the little protagonist of the same name that the film explores the sometimes contradictory and incomprehensible world of adults, set against the backdrop of the Soviet occupation of Estonia and of deportations.
