The film opens with a crackly voice recording of Dr. Robert Lachmann, an enigmatic Jewish-German ethnomusicologist who emigrated to 1930s Palestine. While attempting to establish an archive and department of Oriental Music at the Hebrew University, Lachmann created a radio program for the Palestine Broadcasting Service called “Oriental Music”, where he would invite members of local communities to perform their vernacular music. Over the course of the film Manna follows in Lachmann’s footsteps and visit Kurdish, Moroccan and Yemenite Jews, Samaritans, members of urban and rural Palestinian communities, Bedouins and Coptic Christians, as they exist today within the geographic space of historical Palestine. Manna engages them in conversation around their music, while lingering over that music’s history as well as its current, sometimes endangered state. Intercutting these encounters with musicians, are a series of vignettes of interactions of the artist with her parents in the bounds of their family home. In a metaphorical excavation of an endlessly contested history, the film’s preoccupations include: the complexities embedded in language, as well as desire and the aural set against the notion of impossibility. Within the hackneyed one-dimensional ideas about Palestine/Israel, this impossibility becomes itself a trope that defines the Palestinian landscape.

Le film s’ouvre sur un enregistrement vocal grésillant du Dr Robert Lachmann, un énigmatique ethnomusicologue juif allemand qui a émigré en Palestine dans les années 1930. Tout en tentant de créer des archives et un département de musique orientale à l’Université hébraïque, Lachmann a conçu une émission de radio pour le Palestine Broadcasting Service intitulée « Oriental Music », dans laquelle il invitait des membres des communautés locales à interpréter leur musique vernaculaire. Au cours du film, Manna suit les traces de Lachmann et rend visite à des Juifs kurdes, marocains et yéménites, à des Samaritains, à des membres des communautés palestiniennes urbaines et rurales, à des Bédouins et à des chrétiens coptes, tels qu’ils existent aujourd’hui dans l’espace géographique de la Palestine historique. Manna engage avec eux une conversation autour de leur musique, tout en s’attardant sur son histoire et sur son état actuel, parfois menacé. Ces rencontres avec des musiciens sont entrecoupées d’une série de vignettes illustrant les relations de l’artiste avec ses parents dans le cadre de leur maison familiale. Dans une exploration métaphorique d’une histoire sans cesse contestée, le film s’intéresse notamment à la complexité inhérente au langage, au désir et au rapport entre l’audition et la notion d’impossibilité. Face aux idées simplistes et unidimensionnelles sur la Palestine/Israël, cette impossibilité devient elle-même un motif qui définit le paysage palestinien.
