Latvian Animations Latvian Animations

Latvian animation is having its golden moment – Gints Zilbalodis’ feature-length animated film Flow has made history as the first-ever Latvian film to receive an Academy Award (Oscar), Golden Globes, and European Film Awards as the best animated film, among other 70+ awards. Animation has always been a key part of Latvia’s filmmaking since the 1960s. There are numerous production companies working in all possible techniques in long and short form – pushing boundaries and honoring the artistic heritage. In collaboration with the National Film Centre of Latvia, Festival Scope presents a curated selection of ten short films that explore love, transformation, memory, and the fleeting beauty of everyday life. From the dreamlike reveries of KAFKA. IN LOVE to the kinetic thrill of FREERIDE IN C, and the poetic reflections in RIGA’S LILAC, as well - a 2012 short by Gints Zilbalodis, AQUA: a delicate, intimate study in motion whose visual language would later sweep across festivals worldwide. All films reveal a fearless embrace of experimentation. This selection shows just a small part of the grand works of Latvian animation professionals from previous years.
